Labrador, 9 Year Old
Ricardo, or Blue as he is often now called, is a nine year old Labrador, his date of birth 16/05/2013.
Every now and again we have a dog that stands out above others. Blue is one of these, he is a magnificent dog with an immense heart. His story is incredibly sad, with unbelievable cruelty, but what shines out is the dog himself, he remains a magnificent, trusting, loving, amazing dog.
Blue was the dog bought on a whim by a criminal when he was just a puppy. He has never had any veterinary care. The police had arrived at the house to arrest the man and found a dog physically destroyed, crawling on two legs and shedding blood. The shelter we work with in Spain, AELA, went immediately to collect him.
Apparently the neighbours who had a butcher’s shop were feeding Blue, as he was not being cared for by his owner, but they fed him all their scraps and discarded fat and so he had grown immensely fat. I will let Charo pick up the story at this point “so I found a terrified dog there, hiding under a table with tools, full of blood and eaten by fleas, he was never looked after and I was told that the owner cured a cut on his paw by pouring bleach on it.”
“I think Blue must have had some happy moments in his life, maybe as a puppy, I don’t know the truth, I find it incredible that such a good, loving and noble animal has had such a miserable life and be so magnificent and good as he is.”
Blue was in a terrible state, he had a massive wound near the base of his tail (most of his tail had to be amputated sadly) and he was massively fat, his legs were very bowed due to being overweight and lack of exercise, and he had huge callouses from living and sleeping on concrete. He has lost a lot of weight and continues to get fitter, he has also had a couple of operations to remove large lumps of fat. He has now finished his medical treatments, he may need medications for osteoarthritis in his joints, but that is all. He has been in a wonderful foster home and he has fitted in so well with the dogs including puppies, children and older adults. He has quickly picked up housetraining and is clean in the house. What he really needs is a home where his love can always be returned.
Blue, is one amazing dog, he is massive in heart and body, he really is one of a kind.
